PAF Paradigm Notes:

One way of competing in the market is through cost. Traditionally, cost only referred to the cost of the product alone, however, today it includes the maintenance cost, service cost, operating cost of the product in addition to the product's price. This altogether is termed as cost of quality. PAF paradigm is related to the cost of quality and divides quality costs into three categories, prevention costs, appraisal costs and failure costs. As the name indicates, prevention costs are the cost involved in the process of identifying defects beforehand and preventing them to occur. Appraisal costs are incurred due to measuring quality. This includes lab testing, inspection etc. Failure costs are associated with the product failures either during the design and manufacturing process or after the production is completed.
