Changes in a project are needed to be identified. Not only the changes in the schedule and scope are necessary but the changes in the deliverables and project's outcome/results should also be identified. The process through which the changes in the end results of the project are identified and managed is called configuration management and the document that list the ways of identifying and managing these changes is called configuration management plan. A configuration management plan helps to record the changes in the project's products, manage them and make updates accordingly so that the products' consistency remains and the project's products operate as expected.
