Cercaria Definition:

  • Free-swimming larva of the schistosome trematode that emerges from the snail host and can penetrate human skin, causing schistosomiasis.

Foundations in Microbiology by Kathleen Park Talaro, Arthur Talaro

Cercaria Notes:

Depending upon the life cycle of the trematode, the cercariae germinate from the germ balls in the brood chambers of tertiary, secondary or subsequent generations of the sporocysts or rediae. A cercaria usually has a tail to swim. However, some species, like the human lung fluke, have minute tails, enabling the cercaria to crawl on the substrate instead of swimming.
