Archaerhodopsin Definition:
A transmembranous protein to which retinal is bound; it functions as aclight-driven proton pump resulting incphotophosphorylation without chlorophyll or bacteriochlorophyll. Found in the purple membrane of halophilic archaea.

Archaerhodopsin is a receptor protein family found in archaea. These proteins respond to light and is similar in function to the Rhodopsin protein (found in mammals), but they structurally differ with the rhodopsin proteins.
