piRNA Definition:

  • PiRNAs induce formation of heterochromatin, blocking expression of some parasitic DNA elements in the genome known as transposons.

piRNA Notes:

Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) is the largest class of small non-coding RNA molecules that are expressed in animal cells. Just like siRNA and miRNA, piRNAs form RNA-protein complexes, but they form a complex with piwi proteins. These piRNA complexes are mostly involved in the epigenetic and post-transcriptional silencing of transposons however they are also known to be involved in regulating other genetic elements specifically in the germ line cells. They differ from microRNA in size as they comprise about 26-31 not which is larger than the miRNAs. They also lack of sequence conservation.
