Bottleneck effect Definition:
A sudden change in the environment, such as a fire or flood, may drastically reduce the size of a population. A severe drop in population size can cause the bottleneck effect, so named because the population has passed through a "bottleneck" that reduces its size.

Bottleneck effect Notes:
A population bottleneck or genetic bottleneck is a sharp reduction in the size of a population due to many environmental events which can include earthquakes, famines, floods, disease, fires or human activities such as genocide. Such events can reduce the variation in the gene pool of a population which results in a smaller population, with a smaller genetic diversity which passes on only these genes to future generations.
