Tissue-specific gene expression can result in the presence or absence of certain protein interactions and complexes, leading to profound functional differences of biological processes between the tissue. The proteins that are needed in specific tissues for their function are structure are expressed there. For example the insulin protein is secreted by the pancreatic cells only even though the gene for it is present in all the cells of the body.
