Pineal gland Notes:
The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland in the brain of most vertebrates. The pineal gland produces a serotonin-derived hormone called melatonin which modulates sleep patterns. The shape of the gland is similar to a pine cone from which originated its name. The pineal gland is located in the epithalamus which is near the center of the brain, between the two hemispheres. The pineal gland is part of the neuroendocrine secretory organs and these are not part of the blood-brain-barrier.
