Process Map Notes:
Before process improvement takes place, it is necessary to completely understand the process. For this reason, process map is made. Process maps range from simple to complex depending upon the process being studied. Specific symbols are used to indicate a particular activity. A parallelogram is used to show input/output of the system. A diamond indicates whenever a decision is to be made. A rectangle shows the actual processing. All these symbols are linked through arcs or process flow lines. A better way to make a process map is to first develop a general map and then add necessary details wherever required. Process maps usually identifies value-added and non-value added activities. Through process maps, process can be simplified by removing non-value added activities.
