Process maps range from simple to complex depending upon the process being studied. Specific symbols are used to indicate a particular activity. A parallelogram is used to show input/output of the system. A diamond indicates whenever a decision is to be made. A rectangle shows the actual processing. All these symbols are linked through arcs or process flow lines. A better way to make a process map is to first develop a general map and then add necessary details wherever required. Process maps usually identifies value-added and non-value added activities. Through process maps, process can be simplified by removing non-value added activities.
