Expert power is defined as the ability to gain support because personnel perceive the project manager as possessing special knowledge or expertise.

A project manager is entitled to give orders to his or her project team members. This authority is very much needed to make the project team members perform their tasks efficiently so that the project is complete on time with success. There are some situations when the project manager has very little formal power over his or her team members In this case, the best way to control the team is through interpersonal influences. There are many forms of interpersonal influences. One of the interpersonal influence is called expert power. Expert power refers to the ability of a project manager to influence the project team as the team members consider him/her to be the most experienced or expert in the field. The team members automatically obey orders and commands and respect the decisions of the project manager because they perceive that he/she possesses vast knowledge.
