A project manager is granted several authorities and powers while carrying out a project. He/ she can command and give orders to the project team members whenever needed. However, sometimes although the project manager has a lot of authority but little or no formal power. Power is defined as the ability of a person to influence others and control them based on that influence. In the cases of no formal power, project managers use interpersonal influences to control the team. One of the interpersonal influence is called legitimate power. Legitimate power is the ability of a project manager to control the team as the team members perceive him/her to be officially authorized to order and make decisions. Legitimate power relates to the status or position within the project team or organization.
