Activator Definition:

  • A protein that binds to an enhancer (or activatorbinding region) and activates transcription from a nearby promoter. In eukaryotes, stimulates formation of a preinitiation complex..

Activator Notes:

An Activator is a protein (transcription factor) that activates transcription by binding to an activator-binding region (also called an enhancer). It basically increases gene transcription, of a single gene, or a set of genes. Mostly activators are DNA-binding proteins that pair with promoter-proximal elements or enhancer.
