Calculus, also known as tartar, is a type of hardened dental plaque. The precipitation of minerals from gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva in plaque forms calculus on teeth. Although precipitation kills bacterial cells of the dental plaque but the hardened and rough surface formed is ideal for the formation of another plaque.
