Variations in length of genetic markers are called short tandem repeats (STRs). These are tandemly repeated units of two- to five-nucleotide sequences in specific regions of the genome.

When the repeat unit contains 2-5 nucleotides, the series of repeats is called a short tandem repeat, or STR.
