Chemoheterotroph Definition:
Microorganisms that derive their nutritional needs from organic compounds.
Foundations in Microbiology by Kathleen Park Talaro, Arthur Talaro
Chemoheterotroph Notes:
Contrary to Chemoautotrophs, Chemo heterotrophs are not able to synthesize organic molecules on their own. Instead, such organisms ingest preformed carbon molecules like carbohydrates and lipids, synthesized by other organisms. As a result of their dependence on other organisms for carbon sources, Chemo heterotrophs are only able to survive in environments that can sustain other life forms. These are the most abundant kind of chemotrophic organisms, including most protozoa, bacteria and fungi.
