Genetic drift Definition:

  • Genetic drift are chance events that cause allele frequencies to fluctuate unpredictably from one generation to the next, especially in small populations.

Genetic drift Notes:

Genetic drift is the change in the frequency of an existing gene variant in a population due to random sampling of organisms. The alleles in the offspring are a sample of those in the parents, and chance has a role in determining whether a given individual survives and reproduces. Genetic drift can have many outcomes for example it may cause gene variants to disappear completely and thereby reduce genetic variation or it may also cause initially rare alleles to become much more frequent and even fixed.
