Neurotransmitter Definition:

  • At most neural synapses, chemical messengers called neurotransmitters pass information from the transmitting neuron to the receiving cell.

Neurotransmitter Notes:

Neurotransmitters are chemical signals that help in neurotransmission. These chemical messenger help transmit signals across a chemical synapse an example of which is neuromuscular junction, from one neuron to its target which could be another neuron or a muscle cell etc. These neurotransmitters are released from the synaptic vesicles into the synaptic cleft and then they are received by the receptors on their specific target. Neurotransmitters are usually made from precursors such as amino acids which are provided from our daily diet.
