Colicin Definition:
A plasmid-encoded protein that is produced by enteric bacteria and binds to receptors on the cell envelope of sensitive target bacteria, where it may cause lysis or attack specific intracellular sites such as ribosomes.

Colicin Notes:
Colicins are a type of bacteriocins that are produced by Escherichia coli and can also be toxic to some strains of E.coli. Colicins are released in the surroundings to lessen the competition from other strains of bacteria. They bind to receptors of the outer membrane and help them to translocate to the cytoplasm where they exert their cytotoxic effect.
