Catabolite Activator Protein (CAP) Definition:

  • A protein that regulates the expression of genes encoding catabolite repressible enzymes; also called cyclic AMP receptor protein (CRP).

Prescott's Microbiology 9th Edition by Joanne Willey, Linda Sherwood, Christopher J. Woolverton

Catabolite Activator Protein (CAP) Notes:

Catabolite activator proteins are trans-acting transcriptional activators, which are present in the form of homodimers in solutions. CAP's each subunit is made of a DNA-binding domain at the C-terminus and a ligand-binding domain at N-terminus. Two molecules of cAMP bind dimeric CAP with negative cooperativity.
