β Lactam Notes:
β-Lactams come under the category of antibiotics whose molecular structure consist of β-Lactam ring. These antibiotics are the most frequently prescribed by the physicians. Their mechanism of action is to bind with the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibit the synthesis of bacterial cell wall. Some of the examples of β-Lactam antibiotics include penicillin, cephalosporin, carbapenems and monobactams.
