Active Transport Definitions:
Active transport is the transport of solute molecules to higher concentrations (i.e., against a concentration gradient) with the input of metabolic energy.
Prescott's Microbiology 9th Edition by Joanne Willey, Linda Sherwood, Christopher J. Woolverton
An energy-requiring process in which a substance is transported against an electrochemical gradient.
Essential Microbiology by Stuart Hogg
Nutrient transport method that requires carrier proteins in the membranes of the living cells and the expenditure of energy.
Foundations in Microbiology by Kathleen Park Talaro, Arthur Talaro
Active Transport Notes:
Active transport is a process in which energy is required to move the molecules across a membrane against the concentration gradient i.e. from lower concentration region to the region of higher concentration. The two types of active transport are 'primary active transport' and 'secondary active transport'. The former one uses ATP whereas the latter uses the electrochemical gradient. In humans, the intestines uptake glucose with the help of active transport.
