Chromatin Definitions:

  1. Chromatin is a material consisting of DNA and proteins. It is visible in a dividing cell as individual condensed chromosomes.

Campbell Biology by J.B. Reece, L.A. Urry, M.L. Cain, S.A. Wasserman, P.V. Minorsky, R.B. Jackson

  2. Together, the entire complex of DNA and proteins that is the building material of chromosomes is referred to as chromatin.

Chromatin Notes:

Chromatin is a complex of DNA and histone proteins. Chromatin is actually what formed the chromosomes within the nucleus of an eukaryotic cell. Since the DNA is very long is length so in order for it to be able to fit inside a nucleus, it needs to be condensed and packages neatly in the form of chromatin.

Chromatin Notes:

Chromatin the packaging unit of DNA. DNA is a long molecule and it would be impossible to fit it inside the cell without neatly packaging it. As a matter of fact the DNA is a supercoiled string. It is coiled around specialized proteins called histone proteins and that packing unit of DNA with histones is called the chromatin. Chromatin looks like beads on a string and it is itself wound around itself which is then packed in the form of chromosomes.
