Thymine dimers Definition:

  • Covalent linking of thymine bases that are adjacent on a DNA strand is called thymine dimers.

Thymine dimers Notes:

Pyrimidine dimers are molecular lesions formed from thymine or cytosine bases in DNA via photochemical reactions. Ultraviolet light is usually the culprit that induces the formation of covalent linkages between adjacent or consecutive bases along the nucleotide chain in the vicinity of their carbon-carbon double bonds. If the thymine dimers are not repaired in time they can lead to cancer in that cell.
