Product Benchmarking Notes:
When an organization designs a new product or wants to update an existing one, it is better to perform product benchmarking. In order to make the products competitive, it is important to know the strengths and weaknesses of the products of other firms. Usually reserve engineering is performed i.e. disassembling the products of competitor to check for the pros and cons of the products. Then the initiator firm can improve the designs of its products by adding the strengths of the target firm's products and eliminating any weaknesses in the design. An office chair manufacturer comparing the design of its chair with the leader of the industry (because their chairs are ergonomically fit) is an example of product benchmarking.
