Managing Quality: Integrating the Supply Chain by S. Thomas Foster
Over The Wall Syndrome Notes:
In traditional way of manufacturing, there existed a hierarchy within the organization for design and production functions. Typically, a product design engineer designs the product and pass it onto the next level after approval from the department head/manager. The next level involves process design engineers who then select the appropriate technology and material for the designed product. The process design is first approved by the department head before the actual production starts. These engineers work in different departments but there exists a communication between them. This sequential way of looking at the product design is called over the wall syndrome and cause problems. If an issue in the design is detected at any stage, redesign is requested and the whole process is repeated again. This increases the design cycle time and incur costs.
