Competent cells are those cells that can incorporate foreign DNA in to their genome. E.coli cells are mostly used to get themselves transformed as they can easily pick up DNA if their cell walls are modified as the DNA can pass through effortlessly. Heat shock or the use of calcium chloride can make the cells competent.
