Conjugation Definitions:

  1. Conjugation is the transfer of DNA by direct cell-to-cell contact.

Prescott's Microbiology 9th Edition by Joanne Willey, Linda Sherwood, Christopher J. Woolverton

  2. A process of genetic transfer involving intimate contact between cells and direct transfer of DNA across a sex pilus.

    Essential Microbiology by Stuart Hogg

  3. In bacteria, the contact between donor and recipient cells associated with the transfer of genetic material such as plasmids. Can involve special (sex) pili.

Foundations in Microbiology by Kathleen Park Talaro, Arthur Talaro

Conjugation Notes:

Conjugation is the process by which genetic material is transferred from one bacterium to another through direct contact. During the process, one bacterium acts as the donor of the genetic material while the other serves as the recipient. A DNA sequence called the fertility or F-factor is possessed by the donor bacterium.
