Turgid Definitions:

  1. Turgid is a very firm state of the plants which is the healthy state for most plant cells.

Campbell Biology by J.B. Reece, L.A. Urry, M.L. Cain, S.A. Wasserman, P.V. Minorsky, R.B. Jackson

  2. A walled cell with a greater solute concentration than its surroundings is turgid, or very firm.

Campbell Biology by J.B. Reece, L.A. Urry, M.L. Cain, S.A. Wasserman, P.V. Minorsky, R.B. Jackson

Turgid Notes:

When plants are kept in a hypotonic environment, the water content inside the cells will be at its max causing the cell to swell up but not burst due to the presence of cell walls. This state is considered a healthy state for most plants.

Turgid Notes:

Turgidity is observed in a cell where the cell membrane is pushed against the cell wall. In some plants, their cell walls loosen at a quicker rate than water can cross the membrane, which results in a cell with lower turgor pressure. The pressure on the cell walls is created by the solute potential.
