The ovary is an impotant organ in the female reproductive system that produces an ovum. When the ovum is released it travels down the fallopian tube into the uterus, where it may become fertilized by a sperm. THere is one ovary each on the left and right sides of the body. The ovaries also secrete hormones that play important roles in reproduction and menstruation. The ovary moves through many stages beginning in the prenatal period up untill menopause. It is also considered an endocrine gland because of the many different hormones that it secretes.
