The estrous cycle is the periodic physiological changes that happen due to fluctuations in reproductive hormones in mammalian females. Estrous cycles start after sexual maturity in females and they change during the pregnancy period. Some animals may display bloody vaginal discharge whihc is sometimes mistaken for a period. Mammalian females share the same reproductive system that include the regulatory hypothalamic system, the pituitary gland that secretes different hormones and the main organd ovary that releases hormones like estrogens and progesterone.
