Mucus is a viscous mixture of water, salts, cells, and slippery glycoproteins (carbohydrate-protein complexes) called mucins.

Mucus Notes:
Mucus is a slippery aqueous secretion produced by, and covering, mucous membranes. Mucus serves to protect epithelial cells (that line the tubes) in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital, visual, and auditory systems. It is typically produced from cells found in mucous glands, although it may also originate from mixed glands, which contain both serous and mucous cells. SOme components of saliva include buffers, which help prevent tooth decay.
