The complement system is a part of the immune system that enhances or complements the ability of antibodies and phagocytic cells to clear microbes and damaged cells from an organism, promotes inflammation, and attacks the pathogen's cell membrane. It is part of the innate immune system These proteins circulate in an inactive state and are activated by substances on the surface of many microbes and this results in a cascade of biochemical reactions that can lead to lysis (bursting) of invading cells. The complement system also functions in the inflammatory response.
