Chemiosmosis Definition:
Process, in which energy stored in the form of a hydrogen ion gradient across a membrane is used to drive cellular work such as the synthesis of ATP, is called chemiosmosis.

Chemiosmosis is the movement of ions across a semipermeable membrane, down their electrochemical gradient and the process does not require energy. An example of this would be the generation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by the movement of hydrogen ions (H+) across a membrane during cellular respiration or photosynthesis.
