Mesophyll Notes:
The mesophyll is a soft spongy material located between the upper and lower epidermal surfaces, and is where photosynthesis takes place. It also contains the chloroplasts that give leaves their glossy green appearance. It consists of the palisade mesophyll and the spongy mesophyll tissue. Mesophyll cells are a type of ground tissue found in the plant's leaves. Mesophyll cells are specialized for photosynthesis. These cells in the middle of the leaf contain many chloroplasts, which are the organelles that perform photosynthesis.Mesophyll consists mainly of parenchyma cells specialized for photosynthesis. The mesophyll in many eudicot leaves has two distinct layers; palisade mesophyll and spongy mesophyll.
