The leader of a project team is project manager. A project manager has some authorities that are granted to him or her by the upper management of the organization. A project manager is entitled to command the project team members to do a specific task. Although authority is granted to the project manager but he or she does not posses any power. Based on this fact, interpersonal influences are used by project managers. One of the interpersonal influence is called referent power. Referent power refers to the ability of a project manager to influence the project team as the team members feel personally attached to him/her. This type of interpersonal influence is used by that project manager who possesses very strong interpersonal skills. Referent power is usually used to collaborate rather than commanding and controlling.
