A matrix organization is a combination of functional organization and project-based organization. The functional employees become part of the projects. The functional employees have two reporting bosses, one is the functional manager and the other is the project manager. This means that the relationship exists in two way across the hierarchy. Sometimes, matrix within a matrix is developed. This is called matrix layering. Usually all the matrices within the matrices show formal operations of the company. However, sometimes, matrix layering can also be a combination of formal and informal organizations. Matrices that can be a part of matrix layering include authority matrix, reporting matrix, leadership matrix etc.
