Hydrocarbon can be defined as an organic compound consisting entirely of hydrogen and carbon. There are two types of hydrocarbons, saturated and unsaturated. Saturated hydrocarbons are called alkanes while unsaturated hydrocarbons are alkenes and alkynes. Petroleum and natural are major sources of hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons serve as fuels and lubricants as well as raw materials for the production of plastics, fibres, rubbers, solvents, explosives, and industrial chemicals.
