Tight junctions are connecting junction where the plasma membranes of neighboring cells are very tightly pressed against each other and bound together by specific proteins.

Tight junctions basically have the function of binding adjacent epithelial cells in a narrow band just underneath the surface. They consist of a network of proteins like claudins and other proteins.
