Each restriction enzyme is very specific, recognizing a particular short DNA sequence, or restriction site, and cutting both DNA strands at precise points within this restriction site.

Restriction site Notes:
Restriction sites, or restriction recognition sites, are locations on a DNA molecule containing specific sequences of nucleotides, which are recognized by restriction enzymes. These are usually 4-8 base pairs in length. For example 5'GAATTC 3'CTTAAG is the restriction site for EcoR1 and the enzyme recognizes this site particularly and cuts here on the DNA.
