Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) or Leber hereditary optic atrophy is a mitochondrially inherited disorder which means it happens due to mishaps in the mitochondrial genes and is transmitted from mother to offspring. In this disorder there is typically a degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons and it leads to an acute or subacute loss of central vision. LHON disease mostly affects young adult males.
