Lagging strand Definition:
Strand being synthesized in fragments is called the lagging strand.

Lagging strand Notes:
DNA replication happens on both the strands meaning that both strands serve as templates for the synthesis as the new strand. However one of these is called the lagging strand, and it is replicated in fragments. That is because it is in the 5' to 3' direction and the new strand can only be synthesized if the strand itself is in the 3' to 5' direction. There small fragments are made in 3' to 5' direction of the strand ,called okazaki fragments, that join together later to form one complete strand.
