Flow Chart Notes:
It is important to completely understand the process before improving it. For this reason, flow charts are used. Flow charts are also called process maps. They show the steps that are involved in transforming an input into an output. Flow charts can range from simple to complex by adding more details regarding activities, decisions, branching possibilities, and operations etc. Specific symbols are used in the flow charts to define a particular activity within the process. These include parallelogram (for input and output of the system), diamond (for decision points), and rectangle (for actual processing/transformation). The symbols are connected with arcs or process flow lines. Using flow charts, the points where quality defects can occur can be identified. Also non-value added activities can be identified which are to be removed for process improvement.
