Common Ion Effect Definition:

Common Ion Effect Notes:

The phenomenon in which the ionization of a weak electrolyte is suppressed by the presence of a strong electrolyte in the same solution. It is called common ion effect because there's the presence of a common ion that causes this phenomenon. When two substances are in equilibrium, the addition of a substance with an ion in common with the substances causes a shift in equilibrium. This is another understanding of the concept of common ion effect. We can also say that it is the effect of reduced solubility caused by the effect of one of the ions involved.
