Some blood cells ingest and break down bacteria and other foreign substances, a process known as phagocytosis.

Phagocytosis Notes:
Phagocytosis is the process by which a cell uses its plasma membrane to engulf a large particle. It giving rise to an internal vesicle or a compartment which is termed as phagosome. Phagocytosis is a type of endocytosis. In many of the larger organisms, this process help to ingulf bacteria and other pathogens.
Phagocytosis Notes:
Phagocytosis is a type of endocytosis. It is basically a process by which a cell uses its plasma membrane to engulf a large particle. This engulfing gives rise to an internal compartment called the phagosome. The process of phagocytosis is a major mechanism used to remove pathogens and cell debris. The ingested material is then digested in the phagosome. Bacteria, dead tissue cells, and small mineral particles are all examples of objects that may be phagocytized. Some organisms like protozoa use phagocytosis as means to obtain nutrients.
