Peroxisomes are cytoplasmic organelles that have an important role in catabolic reaction. These organelles contain enzymes that oxidize certain molecules in the cell most important of which are amino acids and fatty acids. Hydrogen peroxide is formed as a by product, hence the name peroxisomes.
