Apicoplast Definition:
Organelles in apicomplexan protists that derive from cyanobacterial endosymbionts. Apicoplasts, however, are not involved in phototrophy; rather, they are thought to be the site of fatty acid, isoprenoid, and heme biosythesis.

Apicoplast Notes:
Apicoplasts are plastids, which are non-photosynthetic and are mostly found in Apicomplexa. They are known as the site of biosynthesis of isoprenoid, heme and fatty acids. They are mostly found in Plasmodium falciparum (parasite that causes malaria) and Toxoplasma gondii.
