Endotoxins are lipopolysaccharide components of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria.

In contrast to exotoxins, endotoxins are released only when the bacteria die and their cell walls break down. Endotoxin-producing bacteria include species in the genus Salmonella, such as Salmonella typhi, which causes typhoid fever.
