Paralogs are homologous genes that have evolved by duplication and code for protein with similar, but not identical functions. These genes arise during gene duplication where one copy of the gene receives a mutation that gives rise to a new gene with a new function, though the function is often related to the role of the ancestral gene. Examples would be the beta-hemoglobin of human and the delta hemoglobin of chimpanzee, or the beta and delta hemoglobin of the same organism.
