Non disjunction Definition:

  • Nondisjunction is a mishap in which the members of a pair of homologous chromosomes do not move apart properly during meiosis I or sister chromatids fail to separate during meiosis II.

Non disjunction Notes:

Sometimes due to an error during cell division, the chromosomes fail to separate properly. There are three forms of nondisjunction: failure of a pair of homologous chromosomes to separate in meiosis I, failure of sister chromatids to separate during meiosis II, and failure of sister chromatids to separate during mitosis. Nondisjunction results in daughter cells with abnormal chromosome numbers which is also termed as aneuploidy and can lead to severe disorders.
