Frameshift mutation Definition:
- A frameshift mutation occurs whenever the number of nucleotides inserted or deleted is not a multiple of three. - Campbell Biology by J.B. Reece, L.A. Urry, M.L. Cain, S.A. Wasserman, P.V. Minorsky, R.B. Jackson
Frameshift mutation Notes:
A frameshift mutation is a genetic mutation caused by indels of a number of nucleotides in a DNA sequence that is not divisible by three. Due to the triplet nature of gene expression by codons, the insertion or deletion can change the reading frame, resulting in a completely different translation from the original. If the indels are in the multiples of three, then frameshift usually does not happen.
